Pablo Casals: Complete EMI (HMV) Classics Recordings 1926-1955 (available through multiple distributors)
Pablo Casals is universally recognized as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, cellist of the 20th Century. He single-handedly created the path for cellists to pursue a solo career as a recitalist and orchestral soloist. Casals was also a fine composer and conductor, an avid chamber music advocate, a great humanitarian, and a person of high moral character. This becomes clear when reading his autobiography, Joys and Sorrow, written with Albert Kahn when he was 90. (See link above) While he is credited with rediscovering the Bach Cello Suites and the first to perform them in their entirety, Casals was also the first to record these magnificent works. The Prades Festival in France and the Casals Festival in Puerto Rico were begun because of his enormous influence and the respect that he commanded throughout the world’s musical community. However, his work in helping his countrymen during the fascist Franco regime along with his many altruistic endeavors throughout his life of 96 years separates Casals from those of enormous musical talents. As he often stated: “The life of an artist is inseparable from his ideals.” Honored by countries and world leaders during his lifetime (he was awarded the U.S. Presidential Medal of Honor), Casals stands among the most influential and revered individuals of the 20th Century along with luminaries such as Albert Einstein and Albert Schweitzer.
In addition, there is a collection of 9 CDs that Warner Classics has recently released of enormous importance. These include the original recordings of the Bach Suites; the celli concerti of Dvorak, Elgar, and Bruch; sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms; and numerous chamber music works where he is accompanied by Cortot, Thibaud, Horszowski, and Schullof. The recording quality is superb and the remastering engineers deserve plaudits. This CD collection can be bought for $28!
