Interview with Andy Snitzer

While Andy and I have both lived and worked in the New York music scene for many decades and share some common friends in the industry, we had never met until this interview. None the less, it felt like being with an old friend as he talked candidly about how he has been able to build his career. We discussed Andy’s musical upbringing and education; his love of rock and jazz saxophone styles; how he got started in the industry as a session player; life on the road; and how the solo career evolved. Two questions that I forgot to ask him and which Andy supplied answers to later are shown below. I hope you enjoy our interview.

Ed: What type of headphones do you prefer to use in studio and concert settings?

Andy: I don’t get too worried about the phones I’m wearing, unless somehow they’re not even pro grade. But normally, in real studios I slap on whatever is in front of me, and if it sounds any version of fine, I’m good. Much more focused on hearing a memorable start to the solo, building it into something of compositional grade.

Ed: Rock/pop music settings typically involve loud volumes. Do you use any form of ear protection?

Andy: Most of us don’t think about it when we’re young but you’ve got to protect your ears; not doing so will have a cost later on, one way or another.  Similar to my headphones vibe, I’m ordinarily fine to use common foam inserts, maybe three quarters into my ear instead of full immersion. That gives me protection, while letting me stay connected enough to what’s happening on the stage.
