Clarinet Warmup 06/26

This daily arpeggio warmup is excerpted from the Eugène Gay Complete Method. It encompasses nine different chords in each of the twelve key centers while moving in a circle of 5ths sequence. The beauty of this exercise is that only one note changes from chord to chord while maintaining the same base note. The seven triads and two 7th chords follow this order:

Diminished triad
Minor triad
Major triad
Augmented triad
Minor triad in 1st inversion
Major triad in 2nd inversion
Minor triad in 2nd inversion
Diminished 7th chord
Dominant 7th chord

The articulation indicated is only one of many that should be incorporated during this exercise. Practice this exercise slowly while concentrating on uniformity of tone and legato fingers throughout the registers. The Eugène Gay Complete Method is one of the most efficient studies available for acquiring a comprehensive clarinet technique and one that was used extensively by David Weber in his pedagogy. I consider it one of the essential materials along with the Klosé Method, Baermann Method, and Rose Studies & Etudes.
